May’s Extraordinary Athlete is one of our CrossFit Teens, Davis Beichler. Some of you may know his parents – Eric and Julie, two of our fittest members at CrossFit Odyssey. His parents have been coming for a few years and have become two of the best friends and members we could ever ask for. Eric, who is in real estate with Mohr Partners, even helped us find our new location here on Lovers Lane!

Davis is a current junior at the Episcopal School of Dallas and he plays football and basketball. He is the wide receiver on his football team and helped take ESD to the championships last year. Now that he is in his off season, he wanted to get bigger and stronger for his senior year. Davis comes to us 3 days/week for personal training. He does CrossFit, but it is specifically tailored to his particular needs. He has been doing an abundance of strength training as well as training specifically aimed at hip explosion and speed. As a wide receiver he obviously IMG_1886needs to be fast, but he also needs to be strong and able to cut and switch directions easily. What a lot of people don’t realize, is that hip explosion and mid-line stability is what helps us be great at stuff like that.

Davis has not only worked on his game, but we have also worked on his diet. He is eating a minimum of his body weight in protein and his parents are thinking about taking out a home loan to pay for his groceries! I overheard him talking to another ESD football player recently and he said, “if you are ever hungry, you’re doing it wrong!” In the 3 months that Davis has been coming to us, Davis has gained 20lbs and increased his back squat 70lbs and his bench press increased 40lbs!  His running times are faster, his box jumps are higher and he is a force to be reckoned with! I can’t wait to see how it affects his football season for his senior year!

IMG_1925If your child is interested in getting in better shape in the off-season, CrossFit Odyssey is starting a summer Program to help with just that. It will be lead by CrossFit Games competitor, John Mariotti and Austin Cantwell, an ESD Football and Lacrosse Coach as well as a North Dallas Young Life Leader.
